Stanley Featherstonehaugh Ukridge is the kind of friend who arrives with a scheme, a borrowed pound, and total confidence that this time the plan cannot fail. Here he persuades the mild novelist Jeremy Garnet to join him on a chicken farm in Dorset, run with no knowledge of poultry and even less money. The hens refuse to cooperate, creditors gather, and the enterprise lurches toward glorious collapse while Garnet quietly falls for a young woman staying nearby. First published in 1906 and later revised by the author, this early novel introduced Ukridge, one of Wodehouse's most enduring rogues. It is looser and gentler than his later work but already unmistakably funny.
