About this book
The Old Helmet, Volume I is a work by Susan Warner. A note to the reader says that the incidents and testimonies given in the work as matters of fact are not drawn from imagination, but reported from excellent authority. The chapter headed The Ruins begins with the lines about one who looked and saw that all was ruinous, with a shattered archway plumed with fern.
Eleanor asks Mr. Rhys whether he is a clergyman, and he answers that he is not what you would call such. The text says that the person Eleanor had seen in the shrubbery was the first one found, as Mr. Rhys had said, and that it was Mr. Carlisle. A letter from a little sister named Julia says that home is very disagreeable now and that mamma is crying half the day.
