About this book
The book gathers tales from the German of Tieck under the titles The Old Man of the Mountain, The Lovecharm and Pietro of Abano. The volume gives London and the year 1831. The tale headed The Old Man of the Mountain begins with Herr Balthasar, whose name was well known throughout the whole hill-country. The tale says that everybody loved and honoured Herr Balthasar, that his bounty was as great as his wealth, and that he was viewed with fear.
A character named Emilius is called timid and shy, and Roderick is described as being in all things the reverse of his friend. Eleazar says that the old master's carriage has again been lent to the folks over yonder for a wedding, and Edward asks "Can you really find fault with this bountiful kindness?" A youth asks Castalio whether he can tell him anything about the events that are hereafter to befall the youth, and Castalio's reply begins with "If I learn the year, the day, and the hour of your birth".
