The Rebellion in the Cevennes, an Historical Novel. Vol. I is by Ludwig Tieck, and the opening page says it is in two volumes, translated from the German by Madame Burette. The preface says that a desire to introduce this remarkable work of the great German Poet to a larger circle of the reading world was among the chief inducements, on the part of the translator, for causing it to appear in an English form. A note on a historical figure says that he was twenty-four years old when he placed himself at the head of armed multitudes, whom he knew how to discipline with great art.
Under CHAPTER I, Edmond's father asks a servant whether Edmond is not yet come home, and the servant answers that a storm is gathering over the mountains. Edmond asks what he has done besides upsetting a splendid card-house, and a child says to papa that he has already forgotten that he shot dead his lady love. A speaker says that the man Du Serre had visions and revelations, did not go about preaching, and was endowed with the gift of foresight.
