About this book
An old man who lives in a wood takes his large bag for a walk and returns with a story that makes him laugh until he can scarcely breathe. His encounter with a hen and a policeman in a red suit sets the pattern for T. W. H. Crosland's comic tale: ordinary objects become the cause of elaborate misunderstandings, and people follow their own peculiar rules. His wife soon borrows the same bag for a trip to market, with complications of her own.
Short chapters, repeated phrases and brisk exchanges make this a story suited to reading aloud with children. The humour comes from the couple's faulty reasoning and the policeman's surprising concern for manners and the weather. A hole in a bag, a roll of butter and an unexpected caller all matter in this small world of domestic nonsense. Readers interested in older children's fiction will find a playful example of how repetition and literal thinking can drive a tale.
