About this book
The Olden Time Series, Vol. 5, subtitled Some Strange and Curious Punishments, is by Henry M. Brooks, with gleanings chiefly from old newspapers of Boston and Salem, Massachusetts, selected and arranged with brief comments. A list of punishments mentioned includes, among others, arrest of the dead, books burned, bound and chained, branded with a hot iron and a cleft stick put on the tongue. The text quotes an account of someone found guilty of passing counterfeit dollars and sentenced to have his ears cropped.
The writer says that on reading these quaint accounts we are led to inquire whether the punishment for crime in olden times was more severe than at the present time. Lewis Humphries pled guilty to stealing and was sentenced to pay treble damages, receive 20 stripes, and sit on the gallows one hour with a rope about his neck. A section headed Arrest of the Dead reports the United States Gazette saying that papers are bringing back the report from Mr. Degrand's paper of the attachment of a dead body in Boston.
