About this book
The Ontario Readers: The High School Reader, 1886, is authorized for use in the public and high schools and collegiate institutes of Ontario by the Department of Education. The preface says the selections in the High School Reader have been chosen with the belief that to pupils of such advancement as is required for entrance into High Schools and Collegiate Institutes, oral reading should be taught from the best literature.
On speech, the book says each syllable and monosyllabic word is called a concrete, and that voice culture has mainly to do with the concrete in all its various possibilities of utterance. A verse calls on the loud Waves, the Forests high, the Clouds, the rising Sun and the blue rejoicing Sky. The book also holds a verse in which France in wrath uprear'd her giant-limbs, stamp'd her strong foot and said she would be free. A verse repeats Douglas, Douglas, tender and true, and says, I never was worthy of you, Douglas.
