About this book
The Origin of Vertebrates is a book by Walter Holbrook Gaskell. The contents list gives Chapter I the title The Evidence of the Central Nervous System and names, among others, theories of the origin of vertebrates, the evolution of tissues and the evidence of Palæontology. The text gives the change from the tadpole to the frog, and from the larval form of the lamprey (Ammocœtes) to the adult form (Petromyzon), as well-known instances among Vertebrata. The text says the transformation process involves a very great destruction of the larval tissues and a formation of new adult tissues, but that one organ, the central nervous system, never shares in the process of histolysis.
The text puts the question whether two segmentations are found in the vertebrate in a region corresponding to the two segmentations in the branchial region. The writer imagines that "Reproduce and die" was the law of the Metazoa at its earliest origin.
