About this book
The Philippines Past and Present opens with its author explaining his viewpoint. Dean C. Worcester writes that he spent some eighteen years in the Philippines, and recalls a boyhood of collecting stamps, birds' nests, eggs and birds, with an early ambition to become a taxidermist.
Other passages reproduce letters and extracts from 1899 to 1901, among them a message from Tarlac and a letter of Papa Isio that mentions Bryan. Elsewhere Worcester discusses what Aguinaldo's government expected and what American officials said, quotes McKinley, and says that Blount left certain facts unmentioned. One passage describes Mabini writing to Aguinaldo in January 1899 with changes to a proposed constitution.
