About this book
The Philosophy of Mystery recounts how the ghost of Hamlet's father walked on the platform at Elsineur to incite his son to take revenge. A story drawn from Pliny the Consul's letter to Sura describes a house at Athens haunted by a ghost that rattles chains. The philosopher Athenodorus hires a house haunted by a chain-rattling ghost, determined to quiet the restless spirit.
The section headed Moral Causes of Dreaming contains a speaker's explanation that the essence of a dream is usually an imbalance between the representative faculty and judgment. The explanation compares the dream with confirmed insanity and says that a chain of ideas may be rational or probable in parts.
