About this book
Observations on Madness and Melancholy is a work by John Haslam, and its title page lists practical remarks on those diseases, together with cases, and an account of the morbid appearances on dissection. The title page marks the work as the Second Edition, considerably enlarged, and dates it 1809. A motto from Dr. Johnson's Rasselas says that of the uncertainties of our present state, the most dreadful and alarming is the uncertain continuance of reason. A dedication says the present volume is respectfully dedicated to Dr. Thomas Monro, a fellow of the college.
The text quotes Mr. Locke as saying that reason comes far short of the real extent of even corporeal being, with many instances wherein it fails us. One case reports that a patient was admitted on June 22 and continued in the hospital until the middle of October, when she was attacked with an eruptive fever, and consequently discharged. A numbered list of titles with prices names, among others, Griffith's Practical Observations on the Cure of Hectic and Slow Fevers and the Pulmonary Consumption.
