About this book
William Jackson's essay on natural theology won a prize at Oxford on 26 November 1872. The title page says it was written in confutation of the scepticism of the day, and the book is dedicated to the Marquis of Salisbury, chancellor of the university. A notice from the Oxford University Gazette of June 1870 is reproduced, offering a prize of one hundred pounds to members of the university of not less standing than Master of Arts.
Jackson says that reasoning on the subject falls into two divisions: arguments drawn from the world outside us and arguments drawn from the world within. He names Plato's dialogues and Coleridge's The Friend as examples of looking at a topic in various lights. One passage sets out the view of refined materialism that choice is a mechanical impulsion and that our motives make us, not we our motives. Another asks whether an alkali is anything more than a bundle of properties.
