About this book
Keyboard music changes its shape as composers rethink what a sonata can contain. In this 1895 study, J. S. Shedlock follows those changes through musical history and close examination of individual works. His introduction explains the relationship between instrumental sonatas and dance suites, then considers how contrasting movements came to be grouped together. Kuhnau's keyboard sonata of 1695 provides a starting point for the book's main historical account.
Later chapters address Emanuel Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and nineteenth-century composers, alongside the sonata in England. The discussion of Clementi shows Shedlock's method particularly clearly: he traces themes between movements, examines changes of key and compares the handling of musical ideas with Beethoven's. These technical observations make the book useful to readers who want to connect the history of piano composition with what they hear or play. Musical examples support an account concerned with structure, expression and the exchange of ideas between composers.
