About this book
Laurie's first trip away from home takes him to an old farmhouse, where Aunt Laura and Uncle Sam welcome him as warmly as they once welcomed his mother. The city boy examines a china cow pitcher, enjoys homemade food and walks around the farm with his uncle. Cows, horses, pigs and downy chicks turn everyday chores into discoveries for a child used to seeing such animals in books.
Virginia Bennett gives this children's story a fantastic turn when a talking pigeon invites Laurie through a small cupboard. A passage bright with fireflies brings him to a dove-cote whose rooms have feather curtains and carpets patterned by the birds' feet. The wind carries stories from distant places, while the pigeons record its news and deliver messages around the farm. Domestic comforts and this busy bird household offer young readers a gentle story about curiosity and the lives they might imagine behind familiar sights.
