About this book

In the tall grass of the meadow live crickets, grasshoppers, ants, bees, spiders, and a whole community of small creatures, and Clara Dillingham Pierson gives each a turn at the center of a story. This was the first of her 'Among the People' collections, setting the pattern for the series: brief tales, read-aloud friendly, in which insects and other little animals think and talk while still behaving as they truly do in nature. Children meet the busy ant and the patient spider and learn something real about each one's habits. The writing is soft and affectionate, with gentle lessons about work, kindness, and getting along woven into the meadow's daily life. Free to read in PDF and EPUB.
