About this book
John H. White writes about a Light Passenger Locomotive of 1851. The text says that in the mid-nineteenth century there was a renewed interest in the light, single-axle locomotives which were proving so very successful for passenger traffic. The text says nearly every well-known maker built the engines in limited number, and that among the few remaining is the 6-wheel “Pioneer,” on display in the Museum of History and Technology, Smithsonian Institution.
The contents list names sections on the Cumberland Valley Railroad, the service history of the “Pioneer” and its mechanical description, among others. The text says the Pioneer burned oak and hickory. On the firebox, the text says 5/16-inch thick sheet was used, since heavier sheet would have blistered and flaked off because of the intense heat of the fire.
