About this book
The Story of the Pullman Car was written by Joseph Husband. The acknowledgment says the author wishes to make particular acknowledgment to The Modern Railroad, by Mr. Edward Hungerford, among the many books from which information was drawn. The text says the first actual iron rails were cast in 1767 by the Colebrookdale Iron Works, were about three feet in length and were flanged to keep the wagon wheels on the track.
In 1814 George Stephenson's engine, the Blucher, drew a train of eight loaded wagons, a total weight of thirty tons, at a speed of four miles an hour, the text says. Early in 1889 the Pullman Company acquired the control of the Mann Boudoir Car Company and the Woodruff Sleeping Car Company, including the entire car equipment and plants. The text says the company maintains a cleaning force in two hundred and twenty-five principal yards and, in addition, at one hundred and fifty-eight outlying points.
