About this book

A surplus space suit delivered to a Minnesota hobby shop brings distant planets within reach of a group of young space enthusiasts. In Raymond Z. Gallun's 1961 science fiction novel, Frank Nelsen and his friends gather around the equipment, balancing practical knowledge with the fear of leaving Earth. Gimp Hines, whose physical limitations seem to bar him from space work, becomes the first to try the suit as the others help check its fittings and supplies.

Beyond Earth, survival depends on fragile craft, careful use of resources and an awareness of how quickly confidence can become carelessness. The travelers grow plants inside their small vessels and approach Mars through the near weightlessness of Phobos. Below them lies a world of abandoned technology, struggling settlements and puzzling vegetation. Readers interested in the mechanics of imagined space travel will find those details tied to the group's hopes, friendships and uncertain place in a widening human frontier.
