About this book

Four crates of precision machinery put Joe Kenmore at the center of an ambitious space project. Traveling by cargo plane, he is responsible for the pilot gyros that will help an artificial satellite operate in orbit around Earth. His concern begins with the delicate bearings and carefully balanced parts, but a conversation with the flight crew introduces another danger: people determined to prevent the platform from ever leaving the ground. Murray Leinster's 1953 novel links the practical work of spaceflight with an adventure built around sabotage and security.

Joe also arranges replacement parts and prepares to spend an afternoon with Sally at Red Canyon Lake. Around them, coworkers consider how to protect the repairs, while the project checks incoming material for radioactivity. Factory orders, guarded workshops and a proposed picnic give the story both technical detail and ordinary human concerns.
