About this book

Captain Bors burns confidential records while the planet Kandar waits for a fleet it cannot hope to resist. Into this desperate preparation comes Morgan, a visitor whose company claims to possess unusual abilities useful to governments and businesses. His confident predictions irritate Bors, especially when they concern information that ought to be secret. Murray Leinster's 1962 science fiction novel sets military judgment against knowledge that seems impossible to explain.

Ships meet above an ice-covered planet, with food supplies, fleet movements and communications all needing careful management. Morgan's daughter Gwenlyn offers practical help, including predictions about arriving vessels, while Bors remains reluctant to trust the company's methods. Technical limits on space travel share the page with questions about duty and responsibility: Bors refuses a comfortable dinner while his crew lives on emergency rations.
