About this book
Sir John Lubbock's book is arranged in two parts. Part I has chapters on the duty of happiness, the happiness of duty, a song of books, the choice of books, the blessing of friends, the value of time, travel, home, science and education. Part II takes up ambition, wealth, health, love, art, poetry, music, the beauties of nature, the troubles of life, labor and rest, religion, the hope of progress and the destiny of man. The preface begins by mentioning the opening meetings of schools and colleges.
The text leans on quotation. One passage cites Helps on suffering and Leigh Hunt's translation of a sonnet by Filicaja; another quotes Shelley and Pepys on money and its uses. A further passage explains that sound and light are both caused by vibrations, and notes that between certain limits our senses give no impression, though other sensations may exist.
