About this book

Lectures on the True, the Beautiful and the Good is by Victor Cousin, translated by O. W. Wight, with an appendix on French art. The title page is dated 1872, and the book is dedicated to Sir William Hamilton.

In one passage Cousin says the eighteenth century was an age of criticism and the nineteenth should be one of rehabilitations. He describes himself as a feeble but zealous workman who comes to bring his stone, and says he wants to offer words of peace to every school of philosophy. Another passage asks what follows if happiness is the highest aim, using the example of loyalty to a friend. He considers what follows if the honest is only the useful. Near the close are notes on churches and monuments, with a quotation from Quatremere de Quincy.
