About this book
The Poetical Works of Henry Kirke White comes with a memoir by Sir Harris Nicolas. The contents list names poems called Clifton Grove, Time, Childhood and The Christiad, among others. The text quotes a letter dated in September, 1799, in which the writer calls his work a business which he likes, a business which he chose before all others.
One poem has the barn still, the master gone, and Dick, upon the ladder tall, nailing the dead kite to the wall. The verses also place little Tom and roguish Kate swinging on the meadow gate. A note says that Henry Kirke White died at Cambridge in October, 1806, in consequence of too much exertion in the pursuit of studies.
