About this book
The verse asks about the origin of a desire that mocks fated circumstance, and calls desire the immortal breath of being. An appeal in the verse asks for attention to the spirit that prompts secret musings, sends out fancies, and piles painted dreams in sleep.
The Cliff-Top places a speaker above the sea beneath a blue sky, with gulls wheeling and wailing around the speaker's seat. The Ocean imagines becoming a cloud, gathering skirts into the air and flying toward a place the speaker knows. The heading to IBANT OBSCURI identifies the piece as a line for line paraphrase of part of Virgil's Æneid.
