About this book
Poems and Songs is by Björnstjerne Björnson, translated from the Norwegian in the original meters by Arthur Hubbell Palmer. A passage speaks of a life seventy-seven years long and but two hundred pages of lyrical production. A passage on the poems says not very many of Björnson's lyrics have love as their subject.
The subjects of the poems, a passage says, may be gathered into a small number of groups: love, religious faith and thought, moods personal to the poet, and patriotism. A poem headed To Stang (1871) speaks of May Seventeenth in Eidsvold's church united, to hallow the day after fifty years. A note on a rallying song for freedom in the North says the United Left is the liberal, democratic party of the Lower House (Folketing) of the Danish Parliament.
