About this book
The Poetry of Architecture by John Ruskin considers the architecture of the nations of Europe in its association with natural scenery and national character. Part I, headed The Cottage, treats the lowland cottage of England, France and Italy, the mountain cottage of Switzerland and Westmoreland, and a chapter on chimneys. The contents also list a part headed The Villa, with chapters on the mountain villa, Lago di Como and the lowland villa.
The author says the study will lead as much to the street and the cottage as to the temple and the tower, and will be more interested in buildings raised by feeling than in those corrected by rule. One discussion warns that not a vestige of column or capital must appear in any part of the edifice.
