The Oriental Rug is a book by William De Lancey Ellwanger. The preface says that Oriental rugs are works of art in the highest sense of the term, and that it has been recently determined at public auction that fine antique specimens, of even modest size, have a financial value of ten, fifteen, or thirty-eight thousand dollars. The text says the chief charm of such beautiful rugs is perhaps in their mystery, with designs odd and strange and full of hidden meanings, and effects often evolved from the crudest and clumsiest figures.
The text says that, broadly speaking, there are no experts on the subject, no authorities, no literature. The text says the wise buyer will reject with scorn any rug, under whatsoever name offered, which shows no other colouring than various shades of chocolate brown. An index lists entries such as Experts, disagreement of, and Geography of carpets and rugs, among others.
