The Poetry of James Joyce
Best known as a novelist, James Joyce began and ended his career writing verse, and this volume gathers that lyric output. At its heart is Chamber Music, the sequence of thirty-six short love poems he published in 1907, delicate and musical pieces that many composers have since set to song. Around them come the sharper, more personal poems of Pomes Penyeach and a handful of occasional and satirical pieces. Read together they reveal a side of Joyce far removed from the difficulty of his fiction, first a young man dreaming of love and later an older one turning wry and tender by turns.
