About this book
Chamber Music, by James Joyce, has a contents page giving each item with its first line, among them Strings in the earth and air Make music sweet and Lean out of the window, Goldenhair. The list of first lines also includes My love is in a light attire Among the apple-trees and I hear an army charging upon the land, And the thunder of horses plunging, foam about their knees.
In one item, a woman is still combing her long hair before the looking-glass, and the speaker says: I pray you, cease to comb out, Comb out your long hair, For I have heard of witchery Under a pretty air. The item numbered XXV begins Lightly come or lightly go: Though thy heart presage thee woe, and asks Oread to let her laughter run till the irreverent mountain air ripple all her flying hair. The item numbered VIII asks who goes amid the green wood with springtide all adorning her, and answers that it is for my true love the woods their rich apparel wear.
