About this book
The Poet's Poet by Elizabeth Atkins has the subtitle “Essays on the Character and Mission of the Poet as Interpreted in English Verse of the Last One Hundred and Fifty Years.” The preface says utterances of poets regarding their character and mission have perhaps received less attention than they deserve. The preface adds that the tacit assumption of the majority of critics seems to be that the poet, like the criminal, is the last man who should pass judgment upon his own case.
The text says some declare that the poet should hold up his magic mirror to the physical world, while others retort that the poet should redeem us from the flesh and show us the ideal forms of things. The text says the dabbler in psychology finds a good deal to indicate the poet's impression that the subconscious is shaping his verse. The text says there is no unanimity of opinion among us regarding the supreme English poet of the last century.
