About this book
Fardorougha, The Miser is by William Carleton. The contents list parts, with Part VIII marked as the last. Under the Part I heading, the text speaks of a night in August when a horseman, advancing at a rapid pace, turned off a remote branch of road up a narrow lane and, dismounting before a neat whitewashed cottage, gave a quick and impatient knock at the door.
Nogher thanks Mrs. Moan for setting him right. A judge asks, for the last time, whether the person addressed will give evidence, and says the court will feel bound to send that person to prison if that person refuses. The text says that the day of Flanagan's trial now approached, and that readers are fully aware of the many chances of escaping justice which the state of the country opened to him, notwithstanding his most atrocious villainy.
