About this book
The Power and the Glory is by Grace MacGowan Cooke, and the front matter lists four illustrations by Arthur I. Keller and the year 1910. Among the chapters in the contents list are The Birth of a Woman-Child, The Birth of an Ambition and The Moccasin Flower.
The text names four small brothers and sisters, with little Deanie the youngest. Johnnie tells Deanie that sister is going to earn money and that Deanie shall have plenty of good things to eat next winter, and some shoes. The text says that a trouble beginning to make Johnnie's heart like lead grew with the growing love Gray Stoddard commanded. Johnnie screams to Uncle Pros that she is trying to go slower but the foot-brake won't hold, as the motor lurches and pitches.
