About this book
The Dual Alliance, by Marjorie Benton Cooke, lists a prologue, Part I, Part II and Part III in its contents. The prologue says that Barbara Garratry was thirty and Irish, and that when she was a tiny mite her father had dubbed her Bob, Son of Battle, because of certain obvious, warlike traits of character. Bob's comedy went into rehearsal at once, and every day when she came home, after hours spent in the theatre, she found daddy laughing over some new scheme he had devised for spending their fortune, when it came.
On the very eve of the production of Bob's play, daddy died. Bill asks Mrs. Bob whether she wants to sleep in the cabin, and Bob answers that she wants to sleep on that bank, in the tanbark beside the brook. A crowd that has indulged in what might be termed a mob fit falls quiet when Bob holds up her hand, as if a lid had been shut down on a bubbling pot.
