About this book
Thomas Dick wrote The Practical Astronomer. The text gives an opinion that light consists of the emission or emanation of the particles of luminous bodies, thrown out incessantly on all sides, and calls this the hypothesis of the illustrious Newton. The text records that Euler brings forward objections against the Newtonian doctrine of emanation.
A passage on a telescope supposes the focal distance of the great mirror to be 9 inches and the focal distance of the small mirror 1½ inch. A telescope passage says the image of the object depicted upon the face of the small speculum is magnified in the proportion of 9 to 1½, or 6 times. An observation note says the double ring was beautifully defined, perfectly distinct all around, and the principal belts well seen.
