About this book
T. W. Arnold, Professor of Arabic at University College, University of London, wrote The Preaching of Islam, subtitled A History of the Propagation of the Muslim Faith. This second edition is dated New York, 1913, and is dedicated to Sir Theodore Morison. The preface to the first edition begins with the author's diffidence about so vast a subject.
One passage deals with Muslim communities in China, noting Marco Polo's stay there from 1275 to 1292 and the town of Talifu in Yunnan, and quoting Ibn Baṭūṭah on the welcome he received. Another passage covers the jizyah tax, including an exemption for a tribe that gave military service and for the Albanian Christians of Megaris, who guarded mountain passes. A further passage describes the Bishnois, a Hindu sect that buried its dead and adopted Muslim names and salutation.
