About this book
Cherágh Ali's A Critical Exposition of the Popular 'Jihád' was printed in Calcutta in 1885. Its title page states the argument: that all the wars of Mohammad were defensive, and that aggressive war or compulsory conversion is not allowed in the Koran. Appendices are said to prove that the word jihad does not mean warfare. A note at the start addresses an alleged injunction against Hindus, quoted by Raja Siva Prasad in a speech of 9 March 1883.
In one passage the author describes the Moslems at Medina after their time at Mecca, occupied with preaching and teaching, building a house for prayer, housing the refugees and making treaties of neutrality with the Jews of Medina and nearby tribes. Another passage weighs the traditions about Kab, naming Jabir-bin Abdullah and Ibn Abbas. A list gives events with their Sura references, such as the Battle of Ahzab and the expedition to Khyber.
