About this book

A young American shipping employee arrives in Macao with a wedding only three weeks away. Robert Adams expects to marry Priscilla Fernald, who grew up in the household of the wealthy Dom Luiz de Amaral. Dom Pedro's hostility unsettles the welcome, while the narrator describes a Portuguese colonial city of painted houses, banyan trees and quiet streets. A later scene turns a moonlit visit to a ruined church into an attack, followed by a disappearance that draws searchers across the peninsula.

Charles A. Gunnison combines this story with verse and other short pieces. The opening poem, 'California,' presents his native state through flowers, trees and memories of childhood. Readers can find both affectionate landscape writing and a suspenseful tale of family connections, rivalry and danger, with the city's gardens, waterfront and architectural ruins giving the narrative its particular setting.
