About this book

History of the Revolt of the Netherlands, Volume 02, is a work by Friedrich Schiller. Book II is headed Cardinal Granvella, and the text says that Anthony Perenot, Bishop of Arras, subsequently Archbishop of Malines, was born in the year 1516, at Besancon in Burgundy. The text says Nicolaus Perenot, the son of a blacksmith, had risen by his own merits to be the private secretary of Margaret, Duchess of Savoy, at that time regent of the Netherlands.

One passage says Granvella changed his master three times, and three times succeeded in rising to the highest favor. Another section says nearly all the governors of provinces refused compliance and threatened to throw up their appointments if the attempt should be made to compel their obedience. A written reply quoted in the text says the ordinance was based on a statement of the numbers of the sectaries, which was altogether false. A bracketed note says the number of the heretics was very unequally computed by the two parties.
