About this book

An offer of a church appointment and a family marriage leaves the narrator determined to choose his own livelihood. Writing to an old school acquaintance, he recalls rejecting his uncles' plans and turning toward trade, despite doubts about his suitability for it. His prosperous brother offers a possible opening, but their family history makes dependence a source of shame. Published in 1857, Charlotte Brontë's novel links the search for work with questions of pride and social position.

The school scenes shift attention to the judgments people make about one another. While correcting Henri's English composition, the narrator recognizes imagination beneath its errors. Her pleasure and renewed uncertainty unfold under the eyes of pupils and school staff. Set partly in Brussels, this love story gives readers interested in education and class a close account of how authority, ability and personal feeling meet in ordinary exchanges.
