About this book

London pavements, a palace guard and a small brown mouse become occasions for verse in A. A. Milne's 1924 collection. Christopher Robin visits Buckingham Palace with Alice, while other children name a dormouse, follow a puppy or step between the shadows beneath an apple tree. Milne lets the speakers sound by turns certain, puzzled and absorbed in play. His introduction leaves their identities open, suggesting that a poem might belong to Christopher Robin, another child or the elusive Hoo.

The poems turn ordinary preferences into little dramas: a king's wish for butter passes through a queen, a dairymaid and a cow, while Christopher Robin insists that hopping is necessary for getting anywhere. Repeated phrases and shifting rhythms make these pieces suited to reading aloud. Children can enjoy the animals and comic exchanges; adults can notice how closely Milne follows the private rules and strong feelings of childhood.

About the author

A. A. Milne

Milne was an assistant editor at Punch and a successful playwright before the bear, and he spent the remainder of his life mildly resenting what the bear did to that reputation. Winnie-the-Pooh appeared in 1926 and The House at Pooh Corner in 1928, both drawn by E. H.
