About this book
The Reef, by Edith Wharton, describes how all the way from Charing Cross to Dover the train had hammered the words of the telegram into George Darrow's ears. The telegram reads Unexpected obstacle. Please don't come till thirtieth. Anna.
One character says You're Mrs. Murrett's niece, and the other shakes her head and says not even that, only her reader. A woman says she wrote notes, and made up the visiting-book, and walked the dogs, and saw bores for her. Owen shrugs his shoulders and says it is too preposterous and humiliating, dragging that woman into our secrets. A woman's eye falls on a note-case she had given him, worn at the corners with the friction of his pocket and distended with thickly packed papers.
