About this book
A scene at the Hôtel Milano has a light laugh floating into the sunshine through the green shutters of a room, while Giles Legard sits on the stone terrace outside. A girl appears in the space between the thrown-back green shutters of the French windows, standing with her head slightly on one side and holding in her hands a branch of roses.
Giles shudders and presses her convulsively in his arms, and Jocelyn draws herself gently away until only the touch of his fingers rests on her arms. A speaker asks “Is it all pity you have for me now? Is there any love left?” and Jocelyn says “I don’t know.” A man smooths his moustache, having already thought of her in the past tense, while a kitten claws his trousers and climbs onto his knee.
