About this book

The Rendezvous, by Ivan Turgenev, has a narrator who was sitting in a birch grove in autumn, near the middle of September. The narrator describes changeable weather, with drizzle since morning, the sun shining warmly at times and the sky now overcast with watery white clouds. The narrator also describes the trunks of the birch trees taking on the soft reflection of white silk and tall ferns tinted in their autumn hue, resembling the color of overripe grapes.

A character named Akulina says sadly to Victor Alexandrich that he will forget her, and asks him in a beseeching voice not to forget her. One speaker says his master, it seems, wants to enter the service in St. Petersburg, and that it may be that they will go abroad. The narrator describes twilight setting in, a violent wind blowing across a yellow, dried-up stubble-field, and a feeling of sadness.

Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev

Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist and playwright, the first of his countrymen to win a wide European readership. A friend of Flaubert and Henry James, he wrote with a spare lyricism, and his Fathers and Sons remains a landmark of the nineteenth-century novel.
