About this book
A troubling dream sends Sir Albert from Coventry to the Black Forest, where he hopes an enchantress can explain why his wife has dreamed of a dragon. His fruitless visit begins a comic account of Saint George’s childhood, complete with mysterious birthmarks and nurses named for the qualities they represent. Kalyb, the enchantress, takes offence at Sir Albert’s anger and plans revenge against his young son.
William Henry Giles Kingston reshapes older material by Richard Johnson into a tale of knights, spells and improbable dangers. The narrator mixes declarations of heroic courage with jokes about ordinary human failings. In another episode, Saint Patrick struggles to rescue his squire Terence from a group of determined mermaids.
