About this book

The introduction to A Desperate Character and Other Stories says the six tales were written by Turgenev at various dates between 1847 and 1881. The list of their chronological order includes Pyetushkov, 1847, The Brigadier, 1867, and A Strange Story, 1869. The book is dedicated to Joseph Conrad, whose art in essence often recalls the art and essence of Turgenev.

Misha speaks fearfully quick and hurriedly, says he let it go cheap and says he is living as he fancies. Baburin is living in the Viborgsky quarter in a little house, and the narrator thinks of Punin all the way there. Onisim goes up to his master, stands over him and twice tugs at his own hair, while Pyetushkov does not get up from the sofa.

Ivan Sergeevich Turgenev

Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist and playwright, the first of his countrymen to win a wide European readership. A friend of Flaubert and Henry James, he wrote with a spare lyricism, and his Fathers and Sons remains a landmark of the nineteenth-century novel.
