About this book
The Revision Revised is by John William Burgon, Dean of Chichester, and gathers three articles reprinted from the Quarterly Review: the new Greek text, the new English version, and Westcott and Hort's new textual theory. A reply to Bishop Ellicott's pamphlet is added, with a vindication of the traditional reading of 1 Timothy III. 16.
The contents also list an appendix of sacred codices and three indexes, of scripture texts, of Fathers and of persons, places and subjects. In one passage Burgon goes through the readings of several Greek manuscripts and calls the theory built on them extravagant. The index shows entries on how the Revisers exceeded their instructions and on the revision of 1881. A later passage discusses word choices such as purpose, journey, think and pain against intent, travel, suppose and ache, and grants that rhythm and subtle associations may reasonably guide a translator.
