About this book
Paul Radin is the author of The Ritual and Significance of the Winnebago Medicine Dance. The front matter describes the work as a dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Faculty of Philosophy, Columbia University. The contents list names, among others, a description of the ritual, the organization of the bands and the prescribed duties of the bands.
The contents list also names, among others, descriptions of the Ojibwa and Menominee Mide′wiwin. One list of duties for a band leader includes the duty to shoot the sacred shell into the candidate’s body. Radin writes that the shooting, as found in the societies discussed, is merely one phase of sympathetic magic. Radin says that if, in the New Hebrides, women have nothing to do with funeral and mortuary rites and a secret society is intimately connected with such rites, we ought not to be surprised that women are not admitted into the society.
