About this book
A summer visit to Brandenburg in 1864 begins with a traveler waiting for a carriage in a quiet provincial town. His walk takes him past shaded avenues to a lake, a decorated steamer and an almshouse with its small chapel. A silent man at an open window and an elderly woman on the steps give the scene a human focus beneath its stillness.
Paul Heyse's novel develops through personal recollection as well as close observation of place. In a later account, a tutor describes three years near a country parsonage, his attachment to a lost love and his friendship with a pastor whose theological studies challenge inherited beliefs. Family duties, questions of vocation and unresolved feeling share the page. Readers interested in German fiction can find both provincial detail and an inward account of affection and faith.
