The magic system is restrained. The politics of who controls the ruins matter more than spells.

For readers who liked the slower, more meditative fantasy of Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogy or Andrea Hairston's work, this is in adjacent territory. Not for readers wanting battles in every chapter. Patience pays off.
