About this book

This volume holds two Norwegian royal sagas, the saga of Olaf Tryggvason and the saga of Harald the Tyrant, by Snorri Sturluson. The English text is by Ethel Harriet Hearn, made from a modern Norwegian translation of 1899 by Gustav Storm. A note credits illustrators including Erik Werenskiold and Gerhard Munthe, and says some of them may not appear in these two sagas.

In one passage Gold Harald asks King Harald to halve the kingdom with him, and the king answers in great anger. Gold Harald talks over his plans with his friend Hakon, who advises him to tell no one. In another passage King Olaf stands on the poop of his ship as the hostile fleet rows out to meet him, and he says that none of his men should lower sail. Verses attributed to Hallfrod are set into the prose.
